WTHS Students Plan Second "Sleep Away"
WTHS Student Council’s “Sleep Away in Quay Way” to Raise Funds, Awareness for Local Homeless Youth
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – This won’t be your garden-variety youth sleepover, as members of the Washington Township High School student council will take part in a “Sleep Away in Quay Way” this Friday and Saturday, October 5-6, 2018. This the second year in a row for the event, which intends to raise funds and awareness for area homeless youth.
Students will gather in Quay Way, an outdoor park within the high school, after school on Friday to set up camp. From 5 p.m. until midnight, students will be collecting donations in the WTHS Core parking lot near the 11/12 wing. All donations will benefit Covenant House – an organization that provides resources and housing to homeless youth – and the TWP Pantry, which collects items for WTHS students in need.
Supplies and items that will be accepted include: monetary donations, toiletries, bottled water, non-perishable snacks, cereal, socks and gloves. The WTHS student council also has engaged their middle school counterparts in the event this year. Chestnut Ridge students have agreed to collect toiletries, while Bunker Hill students are collecting socks.
According to Jessica Hatch, a WTHS senior who brainstormed this idea a year ago, more than 30 student council executive board members will be sleeping overnight in Quay Way.
