District German, ESL Teacher Presents Workshop at Foreign Language Educators of N.J. Professional Development Event
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Washington Township Public Schools German and English as a Second Language Teacher Kayla Berry had the opportunity to host a workshop as part of the Foreign Language Educators of New Jersey State Summer Refresher on Thursday, August 15, 2019. Berry, who teaches German at Chestnut Ridge Middle School and ESL at Orchard Valley Middle School, gave a presentation entitled, “Spreading the Peace and Love: Building a Love of Languages Outside the Classroom.” The workshop focused on creating and promoting a world language club within a school.
More than 200 teachers from across the state attended the Summer Refresher based on “Peace, Love, Language” at Rutgers University in New Brunswick. Berry had to submit a proposal and be selected to present at the event.
During her presentation, Berry explored how to instill the love of languages through the creation of a club, as well as District-wide events that promote cultural diversity and responsiveness in schools. Berry hoped to provide her colleagues with strategies for building and maintaining a World Languages Club and challenging them to promote and accept cultural diversity in the school, as well as the community.
