Mrs. Marissa Walter does a presentation on the Day of the Dead to students in Ms. Liani Dillard’s multi-language learners class.
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Multi Language Learners in Ms. Liani Dillard’s class at Bells Elementary School took part in an incredible cultural lesson last week, as Bells MLL teacher Marissa Walter came to the classroom for a presentation on The Day of the Dead.
The Day of the Dead is a holiday traditionally celebrated on November 1 and 2, though it is recognized on other days, such as October 31, as well. The holiday involves family and friends gathering to pay respects and remember friends and family members who are no longer with us. These celebrations can take a humorous tone, as celebrants remember amusing events and anecdotes about the departed. It is widely observed in Mexico, where it was largely developed, and is also observed in other places, especially by people of Mexican heritage.
Mrs. Walter took the initiative to do a formal lesson for Ms. Dillard’s students after seeing their door decorated in the theme of Coco for the school’s inaugural Hallowed Halls contest, led by principal Dr. Shaun Giberson and the PTO. Mrs. Walter concluded the lesson by having the students make las dulces calaveras – sugar skulls – which are traditionally created to honor ancestors.
“Mrs. Walter used her incredible differentiation skills to not only captivate my MLL learners, but also high flyers,” Dillard said. “I appreciate the collaborative efforts Mrs. Walter made to further embrace the WTPS DEIB initiative.”
Bells kindergarten student Sonny Regalbuto dressed the part for the Day of the Dead presentation. Ms. Dillard’s class decorated their door with Coco as part of the Bells Hallowed Halls contest.
Ms. Dillard’s students created sugar skull decorations, as well.
