    2nd Grade Assignments

    • May 4th- May 8th

Target: I can learn about Cinco de Mayo through a story.

Cinco de Mayo is a holiday that is celebrated on May 5th. According to the database PebbleGo, Cinco de Mayo celebrates the victory of Mexico over France in a battle in 1862. It was declared a holiday in Mexico, and people celebrate it in the United States, too. (“Cinco de Mayo.” Social Studies. Capstone, www.pebblego.com. Accessed 1 May. 2020.)

One of the great things about books is being able to read about different cultures and customs you might not know anything about it. Our story this week is about Cinco de Mayo, and after you have read it, you will be drawing a picture of a way people celebrate the holiday!

To access the Nearpod, click here. Use the code JHITL to join. This is very important: use both your first and last name when you sign on, so I know whose work it is! :)

This year we are going to celebrate all week long! To do so, first, you're going to pick a poem that you like and read it. It can be one that you wrote or one that you found online or in a book. I love this website by poet Kenn Nesbitt where you can even select a poem by length- https://www.poetry4kids.com/poem-length/short/ or by subject- https://www.poetry4kids.com/poems-by-subject/. My favorite poet is Shel Silverstein, too. I love the poem you chose. I hope you are doing well!" This is optional.

    4. Check out the POETRY SLAM Flipgrid throughout the week to watch new video responses. You can even add more than one poem, if you'd like!
