Honoring Autism Awareness
Grenloch Terrace ECC Students Welcome Police Officers to Honor World Autism Awareness Day
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Grenloch Terrace Early Childhood Center welcomed Washington Township Police Officers into the building for a Reverse CBI (Community Based Instruction) on Tuesday, April 2nd, in honor of World Autism Awareness Day.
Reverse CBI is the practice of having community members come into the building to work on skills, rather than having students leave for outings. This is something GTECC Principal Christina Cox has started at the school in the multiply disabled and autism programs with the goal of helping students build skills for kindergarten, when they leave the building for CBI outings.
On Tuesday, School Resource Officers JJ Bilderback and John Hamilton entered the MD and autism classrooms and asked students various safety questions, such as “What is your name?” “What is your phone number?” “What is your address?” Students spent the last month working on generalizing these responses to other peers and adults. They answered using either verbal communication, sign language, PECS (picture exchange communication system) or a device.
