WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – The Washington Township Board of Education welcomed Washington Township High School senior Edward Mulvihill as its new student representative at its work session on Tuesday, September 19, 2023. Mulvihill was sworn into the position by board solicitor Adam Weiss.
In an effort to give a valuable voice to students while also holding Board of Education members accountable to the children they pledged to serve, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed A-3392/S-3392 into law in January 2022.
The bill requires a minimum of one student representative to be included on each board of education for school districts with grades nine through 12, and on each board of trustees for charter schools grades 9-12. The law requires that student representatives are selected by the student body and serve for a one-year term. Under the bill, the duties of the student representative will include: attending all school board meetings (excluded from discussions of the board involving subjects that are confidential); representing the District’s high school students while presenting student proposals and concerns to the board for its consideration; and keeping public high school students informed of the business of the school board by providing a monthly report to the student council concerning the activities of the board of education.
Mulvihill replaces fellow WTHS senior Angelina Chila, who was Washington Township’s first student board representative during the 2022-23 school year.
