BSI Math
The Basic Skills Math program is for students who need to strengthen their math skills. The BSI math teacher works directly in the child’s classroom along with the classroom teacher to provide additional assistance. Students are selected for the program based on report card grades, teacher recommendations, standardized tests or math screenings. Children may be placed in the program at anytime during the school year. BSI math students receive progress reports from their math teacher at the end of each marking period.

BSI Reading
The Basic Skill Instruction or BSI Program is a direct descendant of the 1976 State of New Jersey Thorough and Efficient Education Act which is a fundamental tenet of Governor Brendan Byrne’s State Income Tax Law.
Throughout the years, the governors have changed and the name of the program has varied but the benefits to our students have remained steadfast. Presently known as the BSI Program in the State of New Jersey, the program provides individualized and/or small group instruction in the areas of Reading/Language Arts and Math to selected students in the Washington Township School District.
The BSI Reading/Language Arts Program at the Thomas Jefferson School supports the classroom program through small group instruction in the Reading Center and in the classroom. Mrs. Dulude, the Thomas Jefferson Reading Specialist, and Mrs. Sharkey, the Basic Skills Reading Teacher, along with our BSI team of teachers and interventionists meet with the BSI students working in concert with the classroom teachers to provide a strong platform for success in the classroom Reading/Language Arts program. To insure success for each student by returning that student to the performance level of the homeroom class in Reading/Language Arts is our goal.
