"Too often, the arts have been thought of as a nice, but rather non-essential part of education. When we give our children the chance to explore and develop their own creativity, we encourage the sensitivity and ability for self-expression that is so crucial a part of the well-informed, well-educated person.” Robert F. Kennedy

Our curriculum for Grades K - 2 is primarily an introduction to basic skills, concepts, and tools. Many of the concepts and activities are aimed at developing manipulative skills and promoting social interaction. The attitude that visual expression is an appropriate means of communication is stressed.

In Grades 3 and 4, we have a continuation of the related skills introduced in the previous grades. At this level, basic design concepts and principles are introduced. A problem solving approach is taken at this level as in contrast to the experimental approach at the primary level.

The curriculum for Grade 5 is a reinforcement of previously learned skills and concepts through practical application. At this level the Art Curriculum becomes more life-centered and takes on a humanities approach. There is a greater involvement with materials and the opportunity is provided for exploration and experimentation of a variety of medias, techniques, and experiences. The application of Art Elements and Principles are stressed through a variety of projects.

Art Appreciation is a very important part of our program. Each grade level is exposed to various artists and their artwork. We have two Art Shows each year; a smaller one at the High School and our own show here at T.J. where every child is represented with his or her very best artwork.
