WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Wedgwood Elementary School is celebrating two fourth-grade students who are nationally ranked when it comes to the First in Math online program.

Janice Chen, a fourth-grade student in Mrs. Danielle Tierce’s class, is the No. 1 ranked First in Math player in the state of New Jersey. Janice has earned more than 80,000 stickers this school year. Each virtual sticker is earned when three math problems are solved correctly. Thus, Janice has solved more than 240,000 math problems this school year. Janice also is ranked No. 4 in the entire nation.

“I love that you can choose which math activities to play when using First in Math,” Janice said.

Another fourth-grade student, Hannah Chen (no relation to Janice), is the No. 2 First in Math student in New Jersey. Hannah, a student in Mrs. Kristin Haines’ fourth-grade class, has earned more than 72,000 First in Math stickers, which is good for No. 6 in the nation.

“I enjoy learning new math skills such as algebra when I play First in Math,” Hannah said.

Janice and Hannah are the only two students from New Jersey ranked nationally in the top 10 when it comes to First in Math.

First in Math was designed with focus, coherence and rigor as its cornerstones. Self-paced activities target mastery of procedural skills and fluencies that are essential for internalizing and demonstrating conceptual understanding in mathematics. Students earn stickers for problems solved correctly.
