NJ Governor Phil Murphy Places Congratulatory Call to WTHS Teacher

The call came in and Washington Township High School social studies teacher Brittany Mason, the current Gloucester County Teacher of the Year, quickly placed her phone on speaker so students in her “Tomorrow’s Teachers” course could listen in on the call and receive some advice on their potential career choice.

“As far as I am concerned, educators are at the top of the heap,” New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said to Mason.  “They transform lives, and they make every career possible.  I am so happy to congratulate you on this well-deserved honor, and I hope that when I am in Washington Township, I have an opportunity to stop in and meet you and give you a high five.”

Mason had received an email from the Gloucester County Teacher of the Year liaison on Thursday letting her know that the governor wished to pass along his personal congratulations.

Before disconnecting, Mason asked the governor if he could offer her students some encouraging words.

“Ignore the noise that surrounds education,” he said, “and know that it is a calling and not a career.  A career in education is one of the best careers possible.”

He encouraged the class to continue their pursuit and congratulated Mason one final time.
