WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – Bunker Hill Middle School art teacher Bethany Franz participated in the 23nd Annual Meals on Wheels of Salem County Giant Pumpkin Carve on Saturday, October 5, 2019, drawing on a project that she does with the students at BHMS.

It was Franz’s sixth consecutive year entering the competition, which donates all proceeds to seniors and disabled clients of Meals on Wheels of Salem County. This year, Franz decided to carve – and decorate – her pumpkin in the style of a “Day of the Dead” sugar skull. Each fall, Franz invites the Bunker Hill community to make their own sugar skull molds, complete with royal icing and all sort of decorative items. So, her pumpkin certainly drew off of her experience.

Professional competitors had five hours on Friday night to create their works of art. Then, on Saturday, attendees have the opportunity to vote on their favorites. In addition, there are games for kids, farmers’ market vendors and food trucks to keep everyone entertained.

The fun event celebrates autumn and showcases local artists by embracing the culture and agricultural richness of Salem County.
