The remarkable charitable efforts of Wedgwood Elementary School fifth-grader John Chirico and his family did not surprise his school community. Thinking about the economic impact of all the local restaurants that were forced to close all dine-in services, and concerned for the healthcare workers who are working long hours to combat the coronavirus pandemic, the family recently organized a Facebook group “Food4Staff”.

Within four days, the family received more than $12,000 in donations from donors numbering nearly 5,000.  The donations have gone straight to local restaurants to prepare food, and this prepared food already has been delivered to 12 different hospitals and fed more than 400 healthcare workers.

“John is a scholar-athlete who is always one of the first to offer help to a teacher or a classmate,” Wedgwood teacher Domenick Renzi said.  “He is taking those skills to help out the community during this challenging time.”

The family’s extraordinary outreach was recently featured on Fox29:
