Bunker Hill Middle School principal Mike D’Ostilio and his staff have launched a weekly conversation on character.

As part of the District’s “Building Better People” program, D’Ostilio will enlist the input of selected 6th-8th graders to host a dialogue every Wednesday.

The Building Better People Program focuses on social and emotional learning, the process by which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for other others, and make responsible decisions.. Through experiences designed to foster self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, relationship skills, and social awareness, students work to develop key skills which are necessary to lead happy and fulfilled lives.

The first session enlisted the input of students Gavin Mroz (8), Sebastian Major (8), Abdullah Hassab-Alla (7) and McKenzi Cerchiaro (6) and Mia Terusso (6) for a discussion on being a difference maker. D’Ostilio, assistant principal Dr. Greg Muscelli and school counselor Jenny Kerfoot moderated the discussion.

“Difference makers usually always positively impact others and, at some point, teach everyone a lesson,” Major said during the chat.

The group took turns recognizing some of the difference makers in each of their lives. For Terruso, it is her dance teacher.  For Mroz, his grandfather and for Hassab-Alla his grandmother. For Cerchiaro and Major, it is their mothers.

“Dr. Muscelli and I know that the five are you are difference makers,” D’Ostilio said.  “We have a lot of respect for you and are happy that you joined in this conversation.”
