Washington Township High School Set to Rename Back Turf Field in Honor of Former Coach, Educator Tony DeLucas

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP – The Washington Township Board of Education recently announced it will dedicate the back turf field adjacent to Tom Brown Field in honor and in memory of longtime Washington Township High School educator and coach Tony DeLucas. The ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, October 19, 2024, at 11 a.m.

 

Join the WTHS community, as well as the DeLucas family, as we honor and recognize Tony DeLucas for his decades of service to Washington Township. The ceremony is open to the public, but guests are asked to RSVP if they plan to attend. RSVPs are due to Mrs. Sandy Pfizenmayer in the athletics office by Wednesday, October 16th. Mrs. Pfizenmayer can be reached at (856) 589-8500, x7219, or by email at spfizenmayer@wtps.org. Guests should enter to the left of O’Brien Hall and proceed to the back field.

 

Mr. DeLucas was a beloved history and drivers education teacher at WTHS from 1967-97. He served as WTHS varsity football coach from 1967-83, posting a career record of 83-66-5, earning conference championships in 1970 and 1982. He later worked as an assistant coach at Rowan University (1990-95) and as a volunteer freshman football coach at WTHS (1997-2003). 

 

“Our WTHS community is extremely proud to dedicate our back turf field in honor of Mr. Tony DeLucas,” WTHS Director of Athletics Kevin Murphy said. “He was a beloved teacher and coach for more than three decades at Washington Township High School. Coach DeLucas represented the very best in education-based athletics.”

 

Mr. DeLucas is a member of the Washington Township High School Coaches Hall of Honor (2019), the Gloucester County Sports Hall of Fame (1985), the South Jersey Baseball Hot Stovers Hall of Fame, and the Woodbury High School Sports Hall of Fame. 

 

Additionally, Mr. DeLucas served on the executive committee for the Washington Township Sports Hall of Fame, the Woodbury High School Sports Hall of Fame, teh South Jersey Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and the Gloucester County Sports Hall of Fame.

 

Mr. DeLucas graduated from Woodbury High School in 1954 and from the University of Delaware in 1958. He played football at Delaware under legendary head coach Tubby Raymond.
