Wedgwood Elementary School Students Score a Fast Break of Math Excellence During First in Math Survivor Tournament

For Immediate Release
April 7, 2025

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP - Wedgwood Elementary School students in grades K-5 recently wrapped up a First in Math Survivor Tournament. The tournament, organized by BSI math teachers Domenick Renzi and Autumn Mattera, had grade-level classes competing against each other to earn the most virtual stickers using the First in Math online program. Every three math problems solved correctly earned a student a virtual sticker.

Early rounds of the tournament were designed to crown the top class in each grade level. The grade-level survivors were: Mrs. Beth Johnson’s kindergarten class; Miss Brooklyn Barbara's first-grade class; Mrs. Alexa Woodward’s second-grade class; Mrs. Kristie Attardi’s third-grade class; Ms. Lauren Wills’ fourth-grade class; and Mrs. Donna McGough’s fifth-grade class. After four weeks of playing and competing, Mrs. Johnson's kindergarten class outlasted all other kindergarten through second-grade classes, while Mrs. Attardi’s third-grade class outlasted all other classes in grades 3-5 to win the tournament. Both classes enjoyed a milkshake party compliments of the Turnersville McDonald's.

During the First in Math Survivor Tournament, Wedgwood students in grades K-5 solved more than 5.1 million math problems. Eighty-two students passed the 10,000-sticker count to become Grand Champions and were inducted into the school’s First in Math Wall of Fame. Also, Brooke Chaloult, a third-grader in Mrs. Attardi's class, was named the tournament MVP as she earned more than 25,000 stickers during the month of March.

Wedgwood School ranks No. 1 in the state of New Jersey and No. 3 nationally when it comes to First in Math. Congrats to all of the amazing teachers and students who worked hard to “survive”!!

First in Math was designed with focus, coherence and rigor as its cornerstones. Self-paced activities target mastery of procedural skills and fluencies that are essential for internalizing and demonstrating conceptual understanding in mathematics.
