newssweeney23Sweeney joins the WTPS with a wealth of educational leadership experience. Most recently, he was the director of curriculum and instruction with the Medford Township Public Schools. He has prior leadership tenures as a principal in Cherry Hill and Mount Laurel. He put a premium on social and emotional growth and achievement, and his experience at multiple levels of educational leadership stood out in the hiring process in Washington Township.

“Sean is a systems leader who will leverage his rich, administrative experience to organize and further develop our HR department,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Eric Hibbs said. “Sean is the right kind of person to oversee our staffing initiatives such as acquisition, development and retention with the energy and enthusiasm one would expect from an HR professional. His depth of experience with curriculum made him the ideal candidate to enhance the mentoring program of our instructional staff and ensure that all staff are set-up for success through a comprehensive onboarding process.”

Sweeney’s varied educational administrative background includes stints as a leader at the elementary, middle school, and district level over the past 14 years. He was an assistant principal at Mount Laurel’s Hartford School (middle level) from 2009-10 before getting elevated to Larchmont Elementary School principal (2010-14). In 2014, he was named principal at Cherry Hill’s Clara Barton Elementary School, where he served until July 2022, when he took the curriculum and instruction director position in Medford.

As director of human resources, Sweeney will oversee all human resources processes, procedures, policies and regulations. He will be responsible for the administration of systems for employee recruitment, hiring, retention, discipline, benefits, employee relations, personnel record keeping, compliance reporting, staff development, affirmative action, and collective bargaining agreements.

A self-described “people person,” Sweeney is looking forward to getting started in Washington Township.

“I’m excited to join the WTPS team and apply my experience as an educator as I work to support all staff members throughout the District,” Sweeney said. “I strive to be approachable, timely in communication, and ready to offer guidance and seek answers when needed.”

Sweeney, the son of two former educators, lives in Haddonfield with his wife, Alison, his son, Colin, and his daughter, Brynn.
