Director of Elementary Education
Gretchen Gerber
Gretchen Gerber was appointed to the District’s Director of Elementary Education post effective August 1, 2014. She is responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating K-5 curriculum and instructional services; supervising all elementary principals; coordinating, analyzing and evaluating all activities for student testing; preparing and administering K-5 instructional budgets; and assisting in the recruitment, screening, hiring, training and assigning of elementary instructional personnel throughout the District
Beginning in December 2006, Gerber supervised the elementary-level language arts literacy and mathematics programs and coordinated all of the District’s Basic Skills programming for six years prior to assuming the principal’s role at Bells Elementary in 2012. Prior to her administrative stint, she spent two years at Bells Elementary (1996-98), one year as a sixth-grade reading and English teacher at Orchard Valley Middle School (1995-96) and eight years as a seventh-grade reading teacher and team leader at OVMS (1998-2006). She earned Teacher of the Year distinction in 2000-01 and served as interim assistant principal at the school in the summer of 2004. She authored the District’s Middle School Transition Program Guide (2004) and co-authored the District’s seventh-grade Reading Curriculum Guide (2003). She currently is a reviewer for the New Jersey State Model Language Arts Literacy Grade 1 Curriculum.
Gerber, a Washington Township resident, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education with an emphasis on early childhood studies from the University of Delaware (1993). She earned a Master of Arts degree in school administration from Rowan University (2004) and a Master of Arts degree in reading education, also from Rowan (2008). She is certified as an elementary school teacher, supervisor and reading specialist and holds a New Jersey Certificate of Eligibility for Principal/Supervisor and School Administrator.
