    New Jersey’s current mathematics standards define the requisite knowledge and skills students need in order to be successful in college and in workforce training programs. In addition to standards for mathematical content, the standards include standards for mathematical practice, which describe habits of mind that enable the development of deep mathematical understanding and expertise. Combined, these emphases ensure that students are prepared for higher level mathematics in high school by stressing not only procedural skill but also conceptual understanding.

    At the middle level, each grade has a specific set of focused and coherent standards organized in clusters and domains. These clusters and domains provide the organizational foundation for the current curriculum. In order to achieve these standards, a digital curriculum program is used for classroom instruction and student assignments. Students will benefit from engaging, personalized digital lessons that build important math skills, provide feedback on progress, and offer the ability to complete school work from a computer with Internet access.     Grade 6

    Areas of Focus:

    Connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; completing understanding of division of fraction and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, including negative numbers; writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; developing understanding of statistical thinking

    Grade 7 Advanced

    Area of Focus:

    The New Jersey Mathematics standards begin developing students’ algebraic thinking as early as Kindergarten. A goal of the middle school mathematics standards are to prepare students for an Algebra 1 course in Grade 9. Some students are able to progress more quickly through their mathematics education. As such, students who have completed Grade 7 Advanced and have mastered the content, skills, and understandings of the standards are prepared for an algebra course in Grade 8. This is accomplished by compressing and integrating Grade 7 standards and some of Grade 8 standards into a single course. As this course features all of the Grade 7 content plus additional content from Grade 8, the pacing is by necessity quicker, and the content more rigorous. Careful consideration will be given to ensure that students are able to handle the quicker pace.

    Grade 8 Pre-Algebra

    Formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations; grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships; analyzing two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem

    Grade 8 Algebra

    Areas of Focus/Content:

    The 8th grade Algebra course features interwoven strands of algebra and functions, statistics and probability, geometry, and discrete mathematics. Each of these strands is developed within focused units connected by fundamental ideas such as symmetry, functions, matrices, data analysis, radicals, and curve fitting. Mathematical connections between strands and ways of thinking mathematically that are common across strands are emphasized. These mathematical habits of mind include visual thinking, recursive thinking, searching for and explaining patterns, making and checking conjectures, reasoning with multiple representations, and providing convincing arguments and proofs. Students will explore data relationships numerically, graphically, and algebraically. Graphing calculators will be used in this course where applicable.
